Green Tea Weight Loss Effects.
In January 2005 the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study regarding the effect of Green Tea catechins on body fat.
The 12 week study took 35 Japanese men with similar weights and BMI’s, fed them similar diets and gave each one bottle of green tea per day.
The 35 men were split into two groups for comparison, one group drank Green Tea Extract fortified tea containing 690 mg of Green Tea catechins, while the other group drank Oolong tea with roughly 22 mg of catechins.
At the end of the study the weight, BMI, body fat and waist size of each participant were measured.
The Green Tea group lost an average of 5.3 lb, with a significant reduction in BMI, body fat, waist size and LDL Cholesterol.
That is, compared to the Oolong tea group, who lost an average of 2.9 lb, with less significant reductions in all other variables.
Another Japanese study, using 240 participants each taking a different amount of green tea extract per day for three months also found that those who took larger amounts of the extract showed a more significant reduction of fat.
Green Tea’s effect on Fat Oxidation.
At the Birmingham University in the UK, trials found that consuming Green Tea Extract improved the rate of fat oxidation by 17%.
Polyphenols in green tea cause a metabolic rate increase and through thermogenesis, helps the body to use more energy to produce more heat.
By using more energy, you are burning extra calories to produce the heat, which is attributed to weight loss.
A Dutch study compared the effects of caffeinated green tea to decaffeinated green tea, finding that while both caused a decrease in body weight and waist size, the caffeinated green tea caused a greater reduction in both variables.
Caffeine is known to also increase metabolic rate and thus fat oxidation is thought to be behind the improved results with caffeinated tea.
L-Theanine in Green Tea.
L-Theanine, one of the amino acids found only in the tea plant and a certain mushroom, acts as an anti stress and anti anxiety mood enhancer.
Because of its mood enhancing ability, it is suggested that it may help to improve motivation.
Some people will naturally gain weight because of a lack of excersize, which can be caused by a lack of motivation. L-Theanine in Green Tea may help people become more active, improving their metabolism and thus causing weight loss.
